The vernacular trap

JAMES PANICHI | How black does US president Barack Obama sound? Seriously: if you had only ever heard his voice, would you know he was African-American? My guess is that you wouldn’t – and according to a Democratic senator, that’s a good thing.

Fraser’s liberal predicament

JAMES PANICHI | Talk about the end of an era. Late last month Australia woke up to the news that Malcolm Fraser – a man who we had all seen as synonymous with the Liberal Party of Australia – had let his membership lapse. And so it was with New South Wales minister David Campbell, who resigned from cabinet shortly after Channel 7 broadcast footage of him leaving a gay sauna in Sydney.

Prime Minister Kevin Rudd remained upbeat and gave a good speech, while other dignitaries stuck to the not always advisable tradition of kicking off their comments with a few words in Italian. And in between courses, three giant screens provided a photographic history of one of the most successful Italian-language newspapers ever published outside Italy. And what a fascinating history it is.
